  • The student correctly uses and capitalizes the pronoun "I" both alone and in contractions.
  • The student identifies and capitalizes simple proper nouns, including proper names, geographical names, days of the week, months of the year, holidays, and special days/events.
  • The student recognizes abbreviations, initials, and titles of respect and capitalizes and punctuates as needed. The student capitalizes the first and all important words in the title of a work.
  • The student uses correct capitalization and punctuation in the greeting and closing of a letter.
  • The student uses commas to separate items in a list and to separate a string of describing words about a noun.
  • The student recognizes and correctly uses apostrophes in contractions and possessives.
  • The student uses quotation marks to set off a direct quote.
  • The student uses a capital letter to begin a sentence in a direct quote.
