This teacher resource book covers basic spelling skills for second graders. The exercises can be completed in any order.

The practice included in this resource book will meet or reinforce educational standards and objectives similar to the ones required by your state and school district for second graders:

• The student will recognize the spelling patterns for short and long vowel sounds.
• The student will know the most common digraphs' sounds and spellings.
• The student will understand r-controlled vowels.
• The student will know when the letter "y" is functioning as a consonant and when it acts as a vowel.
• The student will spell high-frequency words. High-frequency words are the 1,000 words that make up 90% of all written material. The majority of the words presented in each spelling lesson are high-frequency words.
• The student will use a knowledge of word patterns (also called word families) to figure out how to spell and decode new words.
